How do you get these images out in the water?

There is something so special about swimming in the glassy ocean before sunrise, waiting for the waves to break on that perfect reef or sandbar. And when everything lines up, and you see the frames in the viewfinder as you take the images - there is no feeling like it!

But to get to that point, it takes a few key steps:

First, you have to have a wave-hunter's mindset. It looks something like this: I obsessively monitor weather data to track swell, wind, clouds, tides, light and other factors to target the best opportunities for capturing unique and engaging images. I get in the water, almost always before sunrise, as much as my calendar and body allows. It could be many times a week if the conditions are right.

Second, you must have the right gear to protect your camera gear (and body). Currently, I use Sony cameras - my main camera is an A7R3 and I use three primary lenses: an 85mm f1.8, a 24-70mm f2.8 and a 70-200mm f4. All Sony lenses. I use Liquid Eye waterhousings. I am currently wearing a Mollusk 5/4/3 hooded fullsuit to keep moderately warm in the winter and Yucca swimfins to dance with the ocean.

A little video too. ;)
