Tahiti was better than we imagined

Tahiti was better than we imagined

It couldn't have gone better. A bulleted list of highlights:

  • Smooth flights there (San Diego to San Francisco, then to Papeete).
  • The ferry from Tahiti to Moorea (and back) was fun. And easy.
  • Two days on Moorea felt like almost enough. If we did more excursions, another day or two would have been warranted.
  • Snorkeling with black tip sharks and stingrays in crystal clear water was amazing. The creatures weren't afraid of us and we weren't afraid of them. Perfect.
  • We stayed a night in an overwater bungalow at the Tahiti Lagoon Resort. We were blown away. Highly recommend. Enjoyed the window in the floor to watch fish, the deck to relax on, the breeze blowing through the room. And then we went snorkeling right outside the bungalow, enjoying tropical fish and corals.
  • The remainder of the trip was spent at the Baya Surf House, hosted by local professional surfer Matahi Drollet. We were able to make some vacation friends with two others staying at the house and had a blast.
  • One of the other travelers, Tiger, and Todd boated out to the Teahupoo wave each morning. Todd captured many photos of the beauty and power of the wave.
  • Though not considered a highlight, Todd was caught by a large set at Teahupoo and hit the reef. A little damage to his body (water camera to face, back scraped up by the reef) and his camera and helmet were torn off and sent to the lagoon. However, some kind locals located both the camera and helmet and returned them to Todd.
  • The red eye home that night wasn't comfortable for Todd with his back injury, but the flight went fine.
  • Overall, one of the best trips we have ever had!
