According to the 2024 Outdoor Participation Trends Report, the frequency of outdoor recreation participation among US citizens fell from 84.6 in 2013 to 62.5 in 2013. That's not a good trend!
Why? We can speculate: Return to Work policies, new Covid habits, generational differences, the "Indoor Nation" effect, more time on phones, etc. Whatever the reason is, we need to reverse course and increase adventure.
How might we do so? Here are 3 ideas:
1) Carve out time for micro-adventures. Maybe take a walk before or after work. Or even take a walk around your building for your morning break. Put it on your calendar to remind you.
2) Add "Adventure Reminders" to your spaces at work and home. They could be images that bring fond memories to mind or souvenirs from a significant trip. Whatever they are, these reminders can train your mind to prioritize getting outdoors.
3) Don't be a lone ranger. Partner up with a friend or coworker for a quick walk or a weekend camping/surf trip. The accountability and creation of memories will be worth it.
