The sound of water

The sound of water

Why are ocean sounds calming?

The rhythm of the waves crashing one after another. The tide slowly inching forward and back. Seabirds squawking. Children playing perhaps.

What is it that allows us that deep breath and wave of relaxation?

There are most likely many reasons, but here are 3 to consider:

1) We are connected to water in our daily lives, often in moments "inbetween" our work and responsibilities. Some of those moments last a while (we float in amniotic fluid in our mother's wombs for nine months) and some happen in small bursts, yet daily (washing hands, showers). We need to drink water to survive. Our body contains an overwhelming percentage of water. Perhaps water is calming because it brings us close to something that sustains us?

2) The power of Blue Spaces. Studies have shown that being around bodies of water improve mental health and encourage us to enjoy the outdoors. The visuals. The white noise. The calm. The impact being around water has on our brains and central nervous systems is unquestionable positive.

3) Water surfaces memories. For many of us, we have memories of times with family or friends at the beach or even by a pool or lake. When we are around bodies of water, we remember. The sounds and sensations trigger the memories. We remember memories of fun, a less complicated time of life, and connection. Remembering is important.
